Bristol City Centre’s fountains, located on the promenade outside Bristol Hippodrome, have had a new colour-changing energy-saving transformation in time for Bristol 2015, the year the city becomes European Green Capital.
Connected Light worked with Bristol City Council and Bryant Electrical (Southwest) Ltd to install the new LED lamps at the site on St Augustine’s Parade. The beacons that stand within the fountain area have previously used halogen lighting shining a purple-blue light for many years. Bristol-based Connected Light were able to produce a colour-changing and waterproof solution offering a modern facelift to the fountains. The lights change through the colour spectrum, and can be set to dance too. With assistance from Bryant Electrical (Southwest) Ltd we were able to integrate the existing wiring with the new lighting system and controls helping to make extra capital savings.
Connected Light’s Tony Ludlow says of the project; “We specialise in energy saving, waterproof lights and the new lamps have an extended lifetime of 50,000 hours, compared to just 2,000 hours for the previous halogen product.
“Its projects like this that make Bristol become a more sustainable city, and we’re got solutions for many different types of businesses. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working on this project to transform Bristol’s iconic fountains.”
Paul Isbell, Service Manager for Energy at Bristol City Council, added: “Energy-saving is one of our top priorities and we’re constantly looking for ways to make Bristol more energy efficient. The council has some ambitious carbon reduction targets and we’re taking it one project at a time to help us achieve these goals.
“We’re looking at the whole picture of life in Bristol and it’s really important to retain the city’s sense of fun. The new fountain lights are perfect as we can change the colour to suit different events taking place in the centre.
“The lights also improve safety in the city centre as the steps to the ferry landing are now better-lit.”
In the year that Bristol has taken on the European Green Capital status, many Bristol-based businesses will be looking at lowering their energy costs and carbon output. As these beacons are so energy efficient they are able to stay lit for longer. LED has lower day-to-day running costs and their longer lifetime equates to lower overall maintenance costs too.
