GLASTONBURY TOR GETS A LIGHTING SERVICES MAKEOVER
For 360 days of the year the biggest star of Glastonbury is the Tor soaring 159 metres above the surrounding landscape. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Glastonbury Festival, and the 650th anniversary of St Michael’s Tower, Lighting Services had the privilege of working with the National Trust and Zumtobel to light the ‘Glastonbury Tor’. We did this using less than a third of the electricity required to boil a kettle.

As Glastonbury marked the 40th anniversary its famous music festival one local business, Lighting Services, in Bristol made an impact on this year’s visual aesthetics.

Lighting Services have enjoyed a close relationship with the National Trust for several years. The Trust, themselves were making their first ever appearance at the festival, and commissioned the lighting of their famous Glastonbury Tor for which they are responsible.

Using the latest colour changing LED technology from Zumtobel the Tor was illuminated each of the five nights of the festival between sunset and sunrise commencing at the exact time of sunset on the Wednesday night at 21:31.

Prior to the event Andy Mayled, National Trust General Manager for the Somerset Countryside, said: “It’s the first time that the Trust will be at Glastonbury Festival and we wanted to do something special to mark the important role that the festival plays in Somerset life and to celebrate its 40th birthday.”

This was certainly achieved with stunning colour changing LED lighting that, each night, used less power than a third of the power of boiling kettle. The lighting also gave off less light pollution than conventional spotlights.
